If i buy an att phone and its not activated, can i put my SIM card in it to activate it?

i have an att phone that i dont like. if i can get a cheap one that i do liek, can i put my SIM card in and use it? or do i have to call and get it activated first?

You need to make sure your SIM card will fit.  I tried to do that with the last one I got.
