  1. 'up lift' - lol, simple answer is: yes, it will play back your old DVDs

  2. like  the others yes, your better of with a ps3 :) i got 1 its amazing the video quality it also upscales normal dvds.

  3. Any Blu-ray player will play all of your 'old' DVDs and send the signals out through the HDMI line. It's part of the Blu-ray design specification.

"Conventional" DVD players convert the digital signal recorded on the disc to analogue RGB form for transmission to the tv set. The television set then converts that signal into a form that the screen can use. Each conversion stage looses a little bit of quality, especially colour depth and fine detail resolution.

Because the Blu-ray player, HDMI link and tv set will keep the signals in digital form all the way from disc to screen the films will look better than when watched through the analogue SCART connector used by ordinary DVD players.

  4. Right, you can safely ignore Etech9's answer, as it's TOTALLY wrong.

All Blue players will play standard DVDs.  Most will 'upscale' standard DVDs to 1080 HD standard.

Most Blu-Ray players are incompatible with the (now defunct) HD-DVD discs, though.

  5. NO. DVD's do not work on blue-ray!

they are both incompatible!  blue-ray uses a blue laser which is more narrow.

    DVD uses a red laser!!!

no such thing as a blue-ray DVD player. its either blue-ray OR DVD.
