but if you mean can you still play the first rock band..yes you can

If you buy Rock Band 2 and you already have Rock Band (the original) all the songs from #1 [including DLC songs] are moved from your HDD to Rock Band 2. If you are just starting with Rock Band 2 though, you will have to purchase the game disc from the first one to get the original songs.($60.00) Instruments work on both games.
