  1. Get a carfax report

  2. Start off by looking for very subtle differences in colour between panels

modern colours are very hard to match perfectly.

Then look round the car and notice the gaps between the bumper and body, wings and doors bonnet and wings are they all the same??

Get on the floor and under the front of the car and look for little ripples in the metal, a dodgy dealer is wise and will probably have hidden the ones on top.  .

Open the bonnet and do the same from above.

It varies from car to car but basically the front is designed to deform on impact so you are looking for little folds and ripples that are not there on the next car along on the lot.

You need to do the same all round the car to check for a front end, back end and our old friend the T bone.

Look also at things like the seals on the doors and the little rubber blocks the bonnet rests on are there traces of paint meaning the car has been resprayed?

Of course if one side or end of the car has new seals and rubber blocks, congratulate the seller, as you walk away.

Increasingly, in the UK anyway, you can check a cars history online where you can find out if it's been subject of  an insurance claim.

I would be more concerned though about making sure it's not a "ding a ling" a total wreck that has been stripped of all it's ID which has then been transplanted into another car stolen to order.

In the UK, buy a crashed car and you can generally get some of your money back by selling the car on.

Buy a ringed car, the Police take the car away and you are left with exactly nothing except the bill for the loan you took out to buy it.

  3. Carfax

  4. Carfax is one way if the car was repaired at a shop.  If it was privately repaired it might not show up on Carfax.

If the car is in your area, have a local trusted body shop inspect the car (you drive or have the owner drive the car to the shop).  You could also have a local mechanic give the car a once over.  You'll be glad you did these things.

  5. Well if you go to carfax.com and you have the VIN Number and I think the License plate number I think you can get all the past information.

  6. used car buying tip... first walk a round car looking for dent and discolor in paint.... check for uneven tire wear, open hood and check all fluids... look under it on the ground and the bottom of car for any wet spots,, check the tail pipe for black,,, get in side and start listen for knocks or ticking and how well it starts,, check every button or switch it has.... drive it 30 minutes checking how well it takes off and braking,, does it steer right...if you find any one of these signs pass... after you drive recheck everything you can again,, if you have any question about how it drive or runs pass.... and its not the miles of ones car but how they was put on.... so checking for signs of care is most important... you can get a great car with no miles but someone race it everyday they drove and it will be junk and you can find one that some old Lady drove only on sunday with over 200,000 that will out last the other so checking a car out and looking for signs of bad care things not working or leaking low on any fluids always a bad sign
