  1. Use your credit card to buy a new keyboard please.

  2. Probably.  It takes time for payments to get posted.  If you're that close, why do it?  It sounds like you need to cut that card up.

  3. I have worked for multiple banks and have been in the business for almost five years now.

Whether using your card as debit or credit you need to be sure that the funds are in your account prior to the swipe.

The debit from your account is going to completely rely on the merchant. Some credit charges can hold money from your account immediately and most debit charges will definetly do this.

When you make a purchase there are two process that happen when being debited from your account. First is the authorization. This is the amount that the merchant is asking for. This usually posts right away and holds that dollar amount from your available balance. The second is the purchase. This is the actual dollar amount that is eventually debited from the account.

On many occassions these amounts differ. If it is used at a gas station they will only hold a dollar at first but will then put the purchase through a few days later when they send in their batch and will then debit the full amount from your account. Restaurants also do this to accomodate the tip and hotels and car rentals in case the room or car are damaged.

If the authorization came through already but has not been debited from your account the bank reserves the right to process an overdraft fee.

Considering the current economy the banks are less and less willing to reverse these fees so I suggest you keep a better check register or cut up that card as the previous user suggested....
