  1. I'm gonna be honest.  College golf is unbelievably competitive right now.  It's the only sport where there are D-II and D-III teams that are better than some D-I schools.  Junior golfers these days are ridiculous.  If you want to play golf at the upper-third level, you have to shoot in the 60s.  It just depends on what your goals are.  You better start playing in local amateur tournaments as well, b/c most of these "seasoned" junior golfers are playing in MAJOR amateur tournaments.

  2. You ought to think about getting into the low 70's to get any kind of scholarship, even at the State school level.  Sounds like your on track though.

  3. You better practice hard.  Right now, you're a dime a dozen.  There are tons of junior golfers younger than you that shoot in the 70's already...so keep that in mind when your practicing.  You need to work harder than everyone else...if you can do that...anything is possible.

  4. If you are currently in the 80's right now, and hope to get to 70's by senior year. Must be in low 70's by junior or sophomore because schools want to recruit during those years specifically D1 schools. D2 maybe with good grades. D3 good chance, but likely to pay for school. Had a buddy in high school with same situation, no schools expect a d3, and he was a long hitter. Golf is a very competive sport to get into these days.

You can look at different schools here and compare your scores to their top schools

You can play college golf while shooting in the 80s, just at a lower D3 level.

There are some D1 schools that will like you because you are smart, and if you can get in the mid-high 70s you can play for sure.

However, if you want to play at a middle to top tier D1 program, you need to start playing in tournaments, doing well and get nationally recognized. To go to a top D1 school, you should probably be consistently shooting under par in competitive tournaments.

Where do you go to school?

  6. Most D1 colleges look for someone who can shoot 74 or better consistently.  So if you are able to improve to that level then your options are nearly endless.

  7. Community college

  8. Sure you do!

How do you do academically? Everyone talks about scores. No one ever talks about academics.

    Great grades Jim.

If you're shooting in the 80's as a freshman you should easily be shooting in the 70's as a senior. The key is shooting consistently in the low 70's with some rounds in the high 60's. An important step for you now would be seek professional instruction and establish the proper basics of the golf swing and then work from that point. I always stress working relentlessly on the chipping and putting part of the game. I realize it's not the most fun or the most glamorous part of the game when compared to banging out those big tee balls but you won't get to the low 70's without it. Hopefully you can find an instructor that is easy for you to work with and can prepare you for some junior tournaments. Being tournament-tested is a must for college scholarships. Email your name to me so I can possibly follow you in Junior Golf Tournaments.

  9. As a high school coach, I'd think you have a very good chance. But how are your grades?

  10. Shooting in the 80's is going to be tough to make a D-I team with a scholarship.  You can probably get some attention from D-II schools.  If you can't get either of those, don't shy away from D-III.  You will have to pay, but if you perform many of the D-I and D-II scout attend the end of year tournaments looking for prospects for the next year.

    Good Luck!
