  1. the driver has to have insurance in case you get in a car crash so the answer is no your dad don't unless he is driving the car as well.

  2. Well if your Dad is the legal owner of the vehicle, he should be insuring the vehicle with you as a named driver.  If he explains to the insurers he does not drive, they will simply exclude him from driving.

  3. In NY the title, registration and insurance should all be in the same name.  If your father is the owner of the car and you insure it, the insurance company will not pay a dime on a claim since you have no insurable interest, meaning you are not the owner of the car and you are technically not out any money if something happens.  Your father can get a policy in his name and list you as the principal driver of the car.  However, all his assets, like his house, savings accounts, etc will be on the line if you have a serious accident.  If it's the cost of insurance in your name that's leading you to do this your father would be better off letting you keep the car in your name and just helping you pay for the insurance.

  4. YES off course you have to insure your car in the name of your father.

  5. no he dosnt if you read the logbook it states the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner section c.4.c

  6. he doesnt need to be insured , you can change the ownership into ur dad's name , but after that he will be ask to insure his car, and if u insured it the deal will be over between you and the insurance company !

  7. UK answer only

I think you’ll find that only the owner (as previous answer states, this is not the same as the registered keeper) can insure a car as only they have a financial relationship with it.

But they do not need to be insured as a driver, I currently do this as I’m working overseas for a while and have insured my sister and brother in law as the drivers for my car.

So I’m not actually insured to drive my own car!

However, if it gets stolen or suffers some other loss I get the money not them. This was easy to do via the website of the UK’s biggest motor insurer (I’d guess they all do it) so it was not a hassle at all.

It is NOT fraud to do this, fraud is where you misrepresent something, if you are the main driver of the car and are insured as such, it’s not at all fraudulent. It sounds like this is what you are planning to do, so all is fine.

So…. technically your Dad would need to insure the car and name you as the main driver on the policy, the insurance will then be rated on your driving risk profile and everything will be above board. Of course you can give him the money to do it with, but technically it has to be in his name and possible therefore paid by him, but in these days of on-line payments that may not be an issue.

Practically however as he is your Dad and therefore by definition older, unless he has a significantly worse driving record than you (or doesn’t drive at all of course) it probably wouldn’t cost much (if anything) more to have him as an additional named driver (younger drivers being generally a bigger risk than older ones).

Obviously you will need to be the named as the main driver if you’re going to drive it most of the time (or you would be acting fraudulently), but that way he can drive it legally should the need arise, which can be handy at times.

    Hope this helps.

  8. the answer is no, only drivers need to be insured.

  9. What you propose to do is actually illegal! It comes under our fraud legislation.

I hate to inform you of this. However, these transactions are normally undertaken, to reduce insurance premiums, which is why it is now regarded as a form of fraud!

Beware! Talk to your insurance company before doing this!

  10. yes  as he owns the car they wont pay you if car gets stolen or wrought off bas his the owner

  11. no only the driver is to be insured and i not sure about your dad being the registered keeper i remember me doing this and putting the car in hubby's name and the car tax people would not let me tax car had to re register back into my name

  12. no

  13. (In the USA) cars are insured, not drivers.  If one has permission to drive an insured vehicle and has a valid license, there is coverage
