The two previous answers are not necessarily correct. The .avi WILL play on your computer's DVD drive if it will play from the hard drive. There is no difference.

Some stand-alone DVD players will play a .avi file and some won't. Look for a symbol that says Divx on the player or it's box. Not all .avi files will play, but some will. The .avi files in a Divx format are most likely to play.
