if the piercing is healed it shouldn't get infected.

if it's a new piercing, just use peroxide or salt water on it a few times a day. do not cover it like the first person said.

you want to leave it open to air.

go to a pharmacy and ask them for those waterproof patches that some people wear over their belly ring when swimming. Whatever you choose to use always remember that it should be water proof

Keeping the entire area super-clean by washing it with something that kills germs but won't irritate it is always the first step in preventing infection.  The drug store has germ-killing cleansers.  Clean the area often.

Applying an antibiotic cream would probably be a good idea.

Other than that, you'd probably be ok with a good, thick, gauze pad (and change it a couple of times a day).  (Gauze is what is used to cover a newborn's belly button while it's healing.)

Don't just cover it and not look at it.  Keep an eye on it for any signs of infection.
