Question:

If i eat Right before i workout do i after to eat right after?

say i eat right before i workout usually i have a banana and whey then i workout like 10mins later...workout goes 45mins it's been about an hour since ive last eaten...do i need to eat again right after the workout or can i wait 1-2hrs and stil be okay? what is the longest till u have to eat so u dont go into a catabolic state

    Okay, the banana and whey are good pre-workout but don't do it right before you train.  Eat the banana about and hour and a half before and the whey about an hour before.  Add some flax oil into the shake.  You need the fat when you train.

    When you eat just before you train it plays havoc with your insulin levels and you find your energy levels going through a roller coaster.

    You should have your post-workout protein shake as close to your workout as possible.  The hour after your workout is the "golden hour".  I'm lucky I can drop the weights and take mine and be fine.  Some guys can't.  It makes them feel like cr*p.

    I'd say the best time is within 30 minutes.  Next best is 60 minutes and 90 minutes at the very outside.  

    Okay, you need liquid protein right after your workout because it's available alot faster than solid protein.  You also need solid protein.

    And don't forget that you need carbs pre and post-workout.

    What I do is have my pre-workout shake with some good carbs and fat about an hour ahead.  After my workout I have my shake.

    When I get home I make a baked potato and stuff it with tuna.

    I'm bulking so it works for me.

    If you don't need the extra carbs from the potato then just have some tuna.


  2. the real best choice is to eat before and after...however, the before meal depends on when you're workout is planned.. I work out between 0900 and 1100 so I'm eating twice before I workout...one is breakfast early around 0630 or so, then a full nutrient protein shake an hour or so before the workout...I eat again within and hour after the workout..I don't think your workout will suffer if you don't eat before you lift, but it's critical to eat a light carb load after...that's when the body is, internally, in the best position to receive a good supply of nutrients. That's because of the good blood supply you've just created by your workout.

  4. u should definitetly eat or drink some nutrional substance. if you do not give your body the materials it needs to repair you will end up tearing your muslces down!

  5. It's best to have a healthy snack then wait an hour before working out.

    After working out, you should wait about twenty minutes before eating, but as long as you don't go like 3 or 4 hours without eating after wards you should be fine.

  6. you should always eat within a half hour after exercising always!

    you do not have to have real food if u are not hungry, but atleast have a whey protein shake, that followed by a servering of glutamine.. as u lose alot of glutamine during your workout!

  7. Joe, you are immediately catabolic post-workout as all of your muscle glycogen is depleted. Its most important to replace that sugar or yes, your muscle will feed on itself. Simple sugars are fine at this stage. My recommendation is a sports drink and a banana. You get the sugar and you get the replacement of electrolytes. That buys you another hour or so to get a halthy sized meal of slower digesting carbs, protein and some healthy fat.

    I think post workout nutrition is vital to proper recovery and muscle hypertrophy. Its too overlooked.
