  1. Well, I'd say basic phrases really.

Things to get a conversation going, "do you speak English?"

would be a really good one, just in case they happen to know any English.

There might be some good sites online that can help you, otherwise, go up to your local bookstore and see what they have there.

  2. you'd need to know the basics.............like hi, how are you, thanx, good bye,....where's the bathroom, and things like that........something you'd want to know any where you'd go........And I'm sure there's alot of people there that speak English....wouldn't worry about it......have fun

It should be a great experience for you.

  3. HaHA HA.

Basic conversational speaking is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. English is a bit of a lost thing on the Japanese. They experience SOO little of it in their lives. At LEAST:

    Where is the Police Station?

    Where is the US Embassy?

Where is this ___? / Take me to this ___?

    Excuse Me

    Thank you

I can't speak Japanese very well

I'm a Foreigner / I'm American <Notice their faces when you say this
