  1. You are looking for a step-up transformer. For light loads such as cell phones, they are easy to find, just search on google for "step-up transformer". However, if you are looking to power something with a good amount of current draw like an amplifier or a decently sized motor, you will be spending a great deal on a transformer. I design electrical systems for buildings, and the price rises pretty quickly for even a "small" transformer. A properly sized transformer for running even a small quarter horsepower motor is substantial.

The last guy was right in saying that it would be easier to just run a dedicated 220V line somewhere in the house. It is safer, less prone to failure, and it would cost much less. If you aren't in permanentnt location, then this won't work, but for anything else, I would just run another line.

  2. check  Grainger industrial supply. This is not a cheap option.

you would be far better off to have an electrician install a 220v outlet.
