  1. sounds like your connecting wireless since all your getting is 54mbs thats the max on wireless

also remember your router may be 300mbs but your internet is not even close to that . most residential highspeed is between 3 and 6 mbs

  2. upgrade ur network adapter in ur computer maybe...

  3. If you are connecting wirelessly with a 802.11g which it sounds like you are, unless you upgraded to a 802.11N router you will only connect at around 54Mbps. That is as long as you are still trying to connect to it with the same 802.11G wireless adapter. If you connect to it wired (With a lan cable) you can connect at around 100Mbps. With an N router you can squeeze a little bit more out of it if you have purchased a gigabit router. They can handle speeds around 1.0 Gigabits per second with wired connection of corse. If you have all of this (Gigabit N router and a 802.11N adapter) you can have close to 108 Mbps wirelessly and 1.0 Gbps wired. I have a combo network of wired with switching hubs and wireless. Im still using 802.11G adapters and 802.11G router. The wireless is only for guests. All my permanent computers are wired. Hope this clears some of this up for you.
