if your cellphone is from a US company i would say no, i have a cellphone from an american company and it doesnt let me get call or messages when im in Mexico

You would first need to call the cell phone company and get yourself on an international plan, this can even be for a temporary basis and then cancel it when you get back to the states.

Even on the international plan, you will still pay the roaming charges of around $0.40 a minute or more, just use your time wisely.
