i think it depends, but definitely most likely a linear scar because the stitches would pull that way.

I had a circular wound stitched up last month.  The resulting scar is linear but at a slight angle.  It's best to keep the area moist with antibiotic ointment and covered with a bandage.  The moisture helps the body not to form a hard scab which can lead to a bigger chance of scaring.  Mine has faded quite a bit in a short time and won't leave much of a scar at all.
