If i have an old air conditioner in my apt (really old) does that raise my bill or help it be lower?

i mean wouldn't a new air conditioner be more efficient for my electric bill. i'm in l.a. and my bill this month for an upstairs one-bedroom was 194~! awful...

  1. The new ones are probably more efficient than the old ones, but that does not automatically mean that you should replace the old one: it depends on how much cooling you need.  The payback period may be so long that it isn't worth replacing the old unit.


  2. Silversk you said AC in apartment. I would guess it is 11/2 to 2 ton unit.  High EER rating would save you about $25.00 month on your electrical bill.

I hate to say this, dear, but if the air conditioner is old, you will not only increase your monthly bill for the use of the electricity, but you are liable to have more dr. bills as well.  Those AC units are never really cleaned properly, and thus, add a lot of bacteria in the air which lead to sinus trouble.  Play it smart...get the super (aka: the Manager) to put in a new one!  Your sinuses will be so much happier, too!
