  1. yes you can. IF your computer supports a video out and your TV has the same video in. For example, if your laptop has an S-Video out then you can use an s-video cable to go into your TV and watch your movie that way. Many laptops also feature VGA out but not as many TV's support that as much as they do s-video.

What model computer do you have (in case you need more clarification)?

EDIT: If you already have an understanding of what the s-video and VGA ports look like then fantastic. If you don't or don't recall, here is some quick reminders:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-video

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vga

Just plug one end into your tv and the other end into your computer. If you have HDMI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdmi)

then that works too, and since you seem to have a newer computer you may have this. If not it's fine. After you make the connection, go into your display settings and you should see something like "output to" or similar. You want to select output to an external monitor (tv) and you should be all set. Keep in mind, however, that the s-video and VGA cables only carry video, not sound.

You seem to have some knowledge of computers so sorry if this sounded preachy. Just wanted to make sure all the bases were covered :)
