  1. Go to  a dealer. Buy the audio auxillary input kit for you particular car.

It comes usually with instructions on how and where to attach it. One end of the cable is connected to another cable in your dash, and the

other end is set on the left side of the glovebox.

Do not experiment with aftermarket installation kits.

  2. If you're talking about the factory aux jack, it plugs into the back of the head unit. After market ones utilize the cd changer cable in the trunk.

Edit: you have to go to the dealer and buy the aux input jack. This then installs into the back of your head unit. You connect your headphone out to this jack. If you want to be able to control the Ipod, you have to do after market, or the ipod your BMW thing. http://www.ipodyourbmw.com

I have the aux input jack, installed it myself. The jack itself sits inside the glove box.

  3. there are plenty of articles in bimmerfest.com and e46fanatics.com regarding connecting an ipod/mp3 interface to the BMW. Many people just fix it in teh glove box, and the rest usually fix it in the truck, where the CD changer is. There are people who also fit it in the euro-tray (next to the handbrake).

I personally think that glovebox is the best option, as it sits neatly away.
