  1. Well, I don't think that you would make varsity just having a great overhand serve.  Do you have a good pass?  If you do, then you can be a libero because usually in high school teams, you can serve as the libero.  I would suggest you to work on everything else, because don't count on a great serve to get you through.  Like Gordonmorrison said, some teams do have a specialized server but thats rare.  Mostly, thats JV stuff.  Good Luck and work on your fundamentals!

  2. ugh...no to make the varsity team u need to b the best in every position if can and u just have one in particular that u r extra good at then u r god to go..............

    good luck

  3. in order to make the team u not only have to serve really well but u have to be able to bump properly, have great sets, and spike strongly! good luck

  4. There is more then one type of serve to know for volleyball, so which one do you know?  And if you know more then one, which ones do you know?  You said you know how to do more then just serving, so what else are you good at?

My advice to you would be to get involved with some clubs (volleyball teams outside of high school), attend camps religiously in the summer, and talk one on one with your coaches about your strengthes and weaknesses.  I've never seen you play volleyball so I don't know how well you play.

To answer your question, no, serving won't get you on the team.  You need to be able to atleast put down the fundamentals, such as passing, setting, and possibly hitting, depending on your position.  If you go in to tryouts and are prepared to show your stuff, then you should do well.  If you're walking in thinking serving is going to land you the spot, it's not going to, and don't waste your time.

Hope I could be of help!

  5. If the only skill you do well is serving, you will probably not make the varsity.  Being a good server will help you make the varsity, but you will not make it if you can not pass, set, spike or block as well.  While you may get some playing time as a serving specialist, most teams do not have room to keep one on the team that can only serve.

  6. you know what? my coach wanted me to concentrate on being a libero for the womens' national under-23 team a few years back but since i have a very good floating serve (my best serve is floating jump serve), he did not want to waste my (i can say) talent. in the end, he registered me as a regular player so he can sub me in & out to get points from my serve and help the team out by defending at the back. so, yeah,i really think having a good serve helps a lot. but back it up with other skills as well because it helps to be an all-rounder in volleyball. since 1998 until now, i have played in every position in the court - even as a setter!

  7. YES OF COURSE! :D

Obviously just a serve won't be very convincing but since you could do more than a serve, I think you are in a better position than all the other 'normal servers'.

As a volleyball player myself, my coach always tells me that as long as your serve is powerful, it is actually POSSIBLE to win a match just by serving. (girl's match only, i don't know about guys) So coaches actually WANT people who can serve those kind of power balls that can 'float', 'sudden dip' or just simply really straight and fast.

    :D gd luck btw

  8. A good serve will definately hep but you probably won't get in with just a great serve. You will also need to be able to pass and hit well
