  1. check with the office staff, some places will require a "hold fee" which is non-refundable, but often applied to your move in balance once you choose to move into their community. This is generally about $150. If you're talking about the deposit you pay once actually moving in, you usually have 30 days from your move-in date to decide if the place is right for you and then they will issue a refund minus the hold fee if applicable.


  2. Usually not.  The deposit is so the landlord will hold the apartment for you.  He stops showing it and therefore losses potential buyers.  If you decide not to take it you lose the deposit.
