I have just started growing plants in my house, and I'm wondering if they are kept in the same soil for a long period of time, say years, then will they eventually use up all the nutrients inn the soil? if this is the case are there ways of replacing these nutrients besides buying fertilisers etc?

  1. yes they will use all the nutrients and ultimately become "root bound" aka nothing but roots bursting the pot.  (My Mom's Bird of Paradise encounter)

yes you can use organic fertilizers like "fish emulsion" to prolong pot life of roots only.

good rule of green thumb, roots out of the bottom of the pot signal !!!Play in the dirt !!!  "please give me a new home" reppot time.

Lots of house plants will root in water - experiment, have fun, want cuttings?

  2. You will have to change the soil once in a while
