Here in Massachusetts, it is illegal to have any fishes in the Serrasalmus genus. But there are so many fishes that are having their names change but the law has not changed. This means that as long as the piranha is not in the Serrasalmus genus then it is legal to own it.

Not all states will be legal to own pirhana's. So it depends on where you live. If the state you live in does allow it, you can ask any fish store to special order them for you. Most places can and will do this for you. Or you can try online, there are many stores in the US that ship fish.

Many States in the US prohibit piranha.  Most of the States banning these fish are in the Southern States because the fish would likely survive if released into local ponds, lakes and/or streams.  Here is a map showing the States where piranha are illegal:  http://www.angelfire.com/biz/piranha038/...

Even if your State does not ban piranha, you should call your local Fish/Wildlife office to see if a permit or registration is needed to purchase and/or own one.

In States where piranha are legal, you'll generally find them for sale in a good quality pet shop that sells fish.  PETCO and other similar chains typically don't sell them.

Here is the deal if you really want one. Contact your state wildlife dept. In many states that they are illeagl in you can still attain a permit. They document the fish and after it dies you must prove to them it did die or you face fines or jail time.
