If i live in NJ and work in NYC as a student, do i have to pay NY state and NYC tax or only NJ state tax?

rite now i m on my CPT, and got a job in NYC. so when i will pay my income tax (Fed tax + State tax). Which state tax do i need to pay? NJ or NY. If NY then do i need to pay NYC tax also?

  1. All of the above - your employer probably withheld NY state and NYC taxes if the tax tables show withholding to be necessary.  As a resident of NJ you need to file based on income from all sources and there is a credit in NJ for at least some of the New York income taxes


  2. you will need to pay Fed, NJ, NY, and NYC but you get some credit towards your NJ tax.

Murzy is correct!  You have to file for NJ state, federal, and NY state tax.  However, you need to remember to credit your NY state tax on the Jersey tax form, so you don't pay double.  Don't let anyone tell you that you have to pay double the tax.  You just have to file on all forms and then credit yourself accordingly.  You don't have to worry about NYC tax unless you live there OR if NYC is taking money out of your paycheck also, which they shouldn't if you don't live there.
