i've just started an interest in growing plants and i know that if you leave yams unattended they'll start sprouting leaves. i was just wondering if planting it would make it grow into a crop.

  1. You can plant them. When the stem is long enough, bury them with some soil at the leaf  end where they branch out, so that it can root and produce new yams.

  2. As long as there's an eye on the part you plant, yes it will.  Depending on where you live, this might not be the ideal time to plant it though.

  3. Sure but you have to plant them in spring or summer and keep them well watered, but since you live in such a warm climate you may even be able to plant them and keep them alive throughout fall and winter.  And depending on what type of "yam" you have you might just have to water it and weed it or you may need to put some type of fence near it for it to vine up. There are bush and vine type varieties so when you plant it be sure to put a fence near it so that it may vine on it, if it is that type. But its best to separate the eyes and plant those individually rather than plant the whole thing so you dont crowd it.
