Question:

If i prime my ceiling white do I still need to paint it white?

Building a new house, just thought if i primed the celing white why would i have to paint it white too.

  1. Most primers don't usually give the coverage that a good quality paint will.

    Also, if the ceiling is drywalled , the drywall primer is useful in finding spots that need to be filled so you don't have dimpling on the walls/ceilings.

  2. Primers also degrade in sunlight, they're just not paint.  Not such a big deal indoors, but over time your ceiling will look it's whitest longest w/paint.

      I actually like Behr's ceiling white enough to keep buying it at home depot, a 2 gallon bucket for like $20.00, & it's washable too.

  3. It would work, but not look as good or last as long.  Primer and paint have two different purposes (obviously) and paint is designed to hold up due to the various compounds in it.  Go ahead and paint over the primer; you'll be glad you did.
