It really depends on how the potato is prepared.

If it's a raw, whole potato, then unless you have absolutely perfect balance, it will keep rolling off.  When they happens, you will just look like a n00b instead of looking cool.  People will snicker at you.

Mashed potatoes, smeared all over your hair, will stay in place very well.  But you must admit, that it would make you look like a dork.

Slightly better on the road to coolness would be if you took a baked potato and cut it in half, and jab the ends of a plastic headband into the potato halves.  You then wear them like headphones.  The bonus here is that in addition to noise-cancellation, you also get nice toasty warm ears.

But the ultimate on potato-head coolness requires that you find a very long potato -- better still, get one long regular potato and one long orange sweet potato.  Carefully cut them into long shoestring french-fry lengths, and fry them.  Salt lightly, and then weave them into your hair as if they were delicious hair extensions.  If you used two different types of potato, be sure to mix up the colors in a semi-random way.  You may need help from a friend to do the back properly, but once it's done you will be the envy of all.

But beware of seagulls when you're outside.  They love french-fry extensions, and will be dive-bombing your head if you're not careful.

Also beware of hungry people sneaking up behind you, especially if they are carrying ketchup packets.
