or if I took trains from hanoi to saigon, how many hours would it take. gotta fly in and out of Saigon so I just want to estimate how long it would take me to get back in time for my flight if I was in hanoi. Also if you know any cheap flights from hanoi to saigon and know about how much it is, that would be helpful too.

cheers.

  1. god you dont want to do that! non stop?!?!? take the train, stop off at a few places , hue, da nang/ hoi an. then to nha trang. if you must go directly from ha noi to sai gon save your moey up [about $100us] and take the plane.. the bus even a tour bus with ac is tough and deffinatly 3 days.[ but would feel like forever] a day to da nang a day to nha trang another to sai gon... take the train get a sleeping birth and make a few 1-3 day stops.

  2. The distance from Hanoi to Saigon is about 1200 miles or 1920 kilometers http://commongroundjourneys.com/about.ph... .  Thus, if you travel by bus at an average of 100 kilometers per hour (62.5 mph), it would take 19.2 hours.  If you took a plane going at 500 kilometers per hour (312.5 mph), it would take about 4 hours.  Check http://www.vietnamairlines.com/ for information on airplane tickets.  Pacific Airlines also does domestic flights.

  3. You probably won't want to take a bus. The roads over here are pretty bad and traffic is scary. Plus the buses are constantly adding new passengers and letting passengers off, so it takes forever to go anywhere. You might be able to catch a good bus if it's from one of the travel companies here, and they may be able to get you from Hanoi to Saigon for around $20, but it will take a few days for the trip. There is an "express" train from Hanoi to Saigon and vice-versa that takes about 30 hours for a one-way trip. So if you took the train from Saigon to Hanoi then back to Saigon it would take around 60 hours and the rates are between $25-50 depending on sleeping car options. If you want to fly it's about a 2 hour flight, and you can take Vietnam Airlines for around $100 and they have flights back and forth all the time just about. Also some travel agencies can buy the tickets for you and the price might be slightly lower. You could also hire a taxi to take you, but the prices vary greatly from company to company, so I'm not sure how much it would cost. I see one ad here that says $0.40/km, so I'm pretty sure flying would be cheaper than a taxi. So probably you would want to take the train for around $50 for 30 hours, or fly for around $100 for 2 hours.
