  1. I agree with SFR1224......tires are the quickest, cheapest way to get bang for your buck if you're running some clunkers right now.   If you have heavy rubber, investing in some good tires will be instantly noticeable and might make you happy.

If you have good tires now (and can't save more than 200g by buying a new set), then you could look at a wheelset.   First, however, consider whether or not your bike is worthy of the expense of upgrading to new wheels.   If it's a cheaper bike, you'd probably do best to save your money and put it toward a new, better bike in the future.

Post back with some specific info and we can help you better.

  2. I don't really see tires and wheels as comparable upgrades.

You can buy an awesome set of tires for $100.00.  You can't even touch a decent set of wheels for $100.00.  So, first question is how much money do you have to spend?

Next question is how much bang do you want for your buck given the type of riding you do.  If you have pretty crappy, heavy tires, new ones will provide a lot of bang for the buck.

If you are into cross country type mountain biking lightweight, narrow, low k**b tires are a great upgrade.  You'll reduce rotating mass which will make your bike accelerate more quickly, climb faster, and feel more nimble.

If you are downhill/freestyle etc. rider you are going to need some entirely different tires.

Either way, tires can provide a lot of bang for the buck.

Wheels are a bit different.  Wheels are optimized for different attributes.  One person may want a super light fast cross country race wheel.  If you have heavy wheels, you'll love the lightweight ones.  Someone else may want a super strong wheel for downhilling.  It all depends.

    Hope this helps.

  4. It depends what type of bike you're upgrading. Upgrading the tyres on a mountain bike is very different from upgrading a road bike's tyres, they serve different purposes...

    try and be more specific.

Wheels are usually the more beneficial upgrade - lighter/strong/prettier. Reducing rotational mass is important.

  5. I consider tires a wear item; and getting better ones (however you might define "better") doesn't count as an upgrade, it counts as replacing a worn part.

Is the bike worth a wheel upgrade?

  6. Depends on what you have now.  In all likelihood, you'd put new rubber on a new wheelset, right ?

  7. A better rider would make a difference.
