  1. Peter, rates very by vehicle make, model, miles annually you drive, and how you use the vehicle (such as driving to work, you are a student, etc.)

Premium dollars vary widely so you need to speak with your insurance agent before you buy something to see what the annual premium would be. They can model this up for you. As you might suspect, sports cars, high-end imports, and some 4x4's carry the highest rates. Conversely, more "conventional" vehicles have much lower rates. Even within car or truck brands, there are sometimes sizable variations. For example, the Subaru Impreza (even the "base" car not even a WRX or STi) has a higher rate class than either a Forester or a Legacy. A 6-cylinder Mustang owner will pay way less than a Mustang GT owner. Beware also of Jeep Wranglers as they carry high rates as well.

As far as a friend letting you drive his car, you cannot get insurance on his car as you are not the legal "owner" of it. If I were him, to be honest, I would not lend my car to anyone. That's because if you have an at-fault accident in his car, his insurance pays, he (and you) can be sued, and he gets to pay higher premiums for the next 3 to 5 years. It may be a noble thing for him to do. Remember that the road to h**l is paved with good intentions.

  2. no you don't have to buy your own insurance to drive your friends car but you do need to make sure your friend has full coverage over you and anything or anyone else and then you are good to drive good luck hope i was of help to you

  3. If you buy a car, it will depend on what kind it is, how old it is and the insurance company you choose.   Every company has their own rates.

If you just borrow a friend's car for a short time, you shouldn't have to buy your own insurance.  You would have to find out if your friend's insurance would cover you, too.   Never drive a car without some insurance.

Call an insurance company to get the answers to your questions.  In fact, once you know what car you would buy, call several companies and see where you can get the best deal.

My insurance company has access to several insurance companies, so I only talk to my agent and she finds the best company for me.

  4. You should be insured to drive your friend's car but it is always better to ask them, they are the ones that know what insurance they have, if they don't know they can read their insurance agreement/policy.

If you want to buy your own car you should get your own insurance, this means getting quoted by the insurance sites and when you have found a good price/policy just going for it!

See this http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.html take the quote, they'll come back with prices from different insurers in your area. It's very quick and free of charge.

But to find a cheap price you should get several quotes, do some legwork till something better will come along.
