  1. IMO, dream journals are very tiring to keep up with. When you put into words what happened in your dream, it can take up plenty of space even for a short dream. But I still keep one.

I seriously doubt they are necessary for everyone; however, I clearly remember more dreams and more OF my dreams since using a journal.

If this was only for dream recall, you could use a voice recorder instead of writing in a journal. Seeing that you have lucid dreaming in mind, there's the issue with dream signs (common things that occur in your dreams) that you might want to consider. Whether it's easiest to determine your dream signs by hearing or reading can help you decide. --I've been using the written journal for close to 4 yrs, but I have yet to recognize anything common other than I'm usually in a rush. I prefer the written because I won't accidently write over it, delete it, etc. The main problems I do have are ink fading and moisture.

  2. sure - it can help train your mind to recognize dream patterns, therefore increasing the liklihood that you will recognize that you are dreaming and ability to control it
