  1. Seasoned hard wood.

  2. Mesquite

  3. The answer will depend on what's available in your area.  In the northeast United States, locust is one of the best, followed by cherry and maple.  All hardwoods are fine, though.

The wood will have to be dry (also called "seasoned").  For burning in a home fireplace, it should be cut to lengths of 16" to 18", and of course, it should be split.

Pine and other softwoods should not be burned in an indoor fireplace or woodstove.  These woods contain creosote, which can build up in the chimney and start a fire.

  4. I came across this posting on Craigslist, you might find the information there useful.

No, its not my ad.  I am also thinking of selling some firewood I have, about 3 cords of seasoned wood from my land in the Catskills and access to much more wood if I just cut it down.

Also, I've come across a few interesting articles on starting a Firewood business.  I know this is a bit of a trite answer, but Google Firewood Business and you'll find some useful little articles.

This page is useful as well:

Give amount of energy per cord of wood, depending on the wood type.

Also, as the other poster pointed out, you want to stay away from pine, as this will produce excess creosote that will build up in people's chimmneys.  So, that kind of wood is generally avoided.
