If i want to visit tuscany, cinque terre and florence, will it work to stay in florence and make day trips?

To really see Tuscany you need a car.  There is no mass transportation in the hills of Tuscany.  Cinque terre and Florence are very accessible by train.  Plan to spend a couple of days in each city when you visit.

The specific answer is no - a day trip from Florence to Cinque Terre is a haul and will take most of the fun out of your day. You have to take a train to Pisa, and change to the local line to head up there - it can take 3 hours. If you want to do that, you should spend a night in the Cinque Terre or you will be traveling all day.

Like another person suggested, I would recommend staying somewhere outside Florence in the hills of Tuscany.  You can then make easy day trips to Florence and the other places you want to visit.  But, having a car is a must.  

Check out the villa where I live now, they rent out vacation flats by the week.  But they certainly are not the only ones, if you google Tuscany vila rental you can find villas for rent all over the area.  It really is a nice way to vacation- you have a fully furnished apartment for the week- can cook some at home if you like to do that, most have pools, etc.  

www.cenami.it  This is the website for Villa Cenami, which is located in the provence of Lucca, in the town of Viareggio.  It is about 1 hour from Florence and 1 hour from Cinque Terra.  Most people who vacation here do so because of the central location to Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terra, Lucca and the seaside.

Florence is a good central location and bus and train service are available to all parts of Tuscany.  For example, you can visit Sienna by train or bus, Pisa by either means, San Gimingano by bus (through Poggibonsi), Cortona by train or bus, etc.  Some more remote areas might require a rental car for a visit.  There is some pretty good information at http://www.discovertuscany.com/moving-ar...  Buon Viaggio!

Have found staying in a house or apartment in the countryside outside Florence to be a great alternative to hotels, but most of those properties are accessible ONLY by car (no public transport being available.)
