raise the thermostat above 75 so it wont come on or just turn the thermostat off(switching it to off rather than auto)..Also would it also apply to heating the house as well(if i were to lower the thermostat below 75 as oppose to just turning it off)

  1. yes if you turn the AC off you will save big on your energy bills. But if you cannot live with out it raise the thermostat to 75 and it should help. The reverse will work with your heating the lower the thermostat the less energy you need to heat the home. Also there is a difference in turning down and turning off the AC or furnace by turning it down when the ambient temp reaches the lowest limit the furnace will kick on and maintain that temp as in having the thermostat turned all the way up when the house temp reaches that temp than the AC will kick on.Both units have an ON/OFF switch that totally shuts power off to the unit.I would turn off the power to the AC but not to the furnace as you do not wish frozen pipes in your home

  2. Setting the thermostat so it doesn't come on and turning the switch off are the same thing.  Either way, it's off.

  3. In the winter especially: lower the temperature into the lower 60's if you want too. Don't shut the switch completely off. If, for some reason, you don't get home for a period of time, the house will freeze and the pipes will freeze. Use common sense and listen less to morons. They will have you living in a cave.

Edit: Remember my warning about not listening to morons!

OK, now you can read the next post.

  4. if you live in a area that gets above 100 degrees during the summer do not turn the AC off if you plan to come home in the afternoon and turn it on.

if you you turn  a AC unit on in a house that is over 90 degrees inside you will overload the AC motor and after a few weeks it may burn up.

this will be a costly repair of about $400+

it is best NOT to set the  AC above 85 degrees when you are not there on hot days.

but be advised that with most AC units if you set the unit high during the day to save power.

the saving will be lost when you try to cool the house later.

you get a condition called heat soak where the every thing inside the house absorbs heat and radiates it into the house for hours.

one way to cut cooling cost is to put a low horsepower (1/3 Hp fan in one of the attic vents on you house with a thermostat set to come on at 85 degrees

this will move air through the attic and cool it cutting the heat soak in the attic from heating the house.

some times this heat soak can not dissipate at night without a fan and can build each day causing your AC unit to run longer each day.

  5. Turn the switch off.
