  1. Do formating in your hard drive

  2. I'm assuming your using Windows operating system (XP) use Disk Cleanup, reboot, defragment, (I use JkDefrag for this but the windows defragmentor works too. personal preference. Additionally I use CCleaner) always download from a popular location.

Don't format it unless you want to lose everything and have to reload windows and all your programs, although you could then make an image (ghost it) and burn it to DVD but that takes some experience, people do it all the time though, then like once a year reboot and pop the DVD in and reload it that way. - I'd stick with this simple routine until you have a good spare computer you can practice on.

First you would want to set a System Restore point (see links)

Below is from Windows "Help and Support" (Start button> Help and Support):

"Use the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard to perform all of the following tasks to clear space on your hard disk:

    Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove any downloaded program files (ActiveX controls and Java applets downloaded from the Internet).

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    Remove Windows temporary files.

Remove Windows components that you are not using.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

    Note:

To start Disk Cleanup, click Start, click Run, and then type cleanmgr."

It's also in System Tools off the start menu > programs > Accessories > System Tools.
