What sort of train do you want to be? I suggest a steam train, because they are much more exciting than diesel or electric trains.

Have you got a boiler ticket? Let's assume you have, and all your other bits are in satisfactory order. Are you cleared for main-line running, if not for all the network, then at least a section of it that will allow you to go through your paces. Got that OK?

Good. Now let's assume you have an owner who wants to steam you on the main network and has the cash up front to pay for the running powers to operate an excursion, which they'll get back and more besides because the seats are likely to sell out within a few days of being advertised.

Sorted? Great. With firebox aglow and a good head of steam, you'll be all set for another heritage run, doing what you love best. Your paintwork and brasswork will be polished to a gleam, and you'll have crowds of admirers snapping and filming you all the way along the route.

Don't worry if you don't get to travel on the main line - most steam trains don't. You'll still get to show what you're made of on the heritage lines, not only the one where you're based, but others up and down the country as well.

There is a downside to this, and it's that you'll almost certainly be moved around by road on a low-loader, because by a strange quirk of economic fate, it's now cheaper to do it that way than move you by rail.

But don't worry, it'll be worth it once you get there. You'll be so taken up with the fun of it all you won't even care if they paint you bright blue and put a smiley face on your front so you can be 'Thomas the Tank Engine' and wow the kids.

Being a steam train is great fun, isn't it?

knock off any hand brakes that may be applied, do a brake test, then call the dispatcher up and ask for a 23-A (track and time permit) to come out on the main between Riverton and Ashby to make a double and then leave on signal indication southbound to Lynchburg.
