  1. Yes you would have time for a horse.

As a yard owner, we have had a vet stabled with us (small animal vet), our local vets all own horses (large animal practice) so it is possible.

What i would say is, you would struggle to have a horse whilst at vet school - i know many who have studied at Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol, and the workload is imense.

  2. depends how busy and how much money you plan to make, sure you can play all day with your horses, but then you would be a BROKE VET.

    Michael...

  3. You might...if you're not on call over a particular weekend or evening(s).

My vet team ropes on her "off" days.....Can't say how much spare time you'd have to call your own...every clinic is different and the number of vets taking "call" will determine how much extra time you have on your hands.

  4. I wanted to be a vet, but I also want to have time with my horses. So I am going to be an equine vet and do riding lessons so I can get the money I need and have a stay at home job.

If you want to have horses, you should do that.

  5. yuppers!

  6. It depends on how many patents you have and how much time you'll regularily need for your job a day to day basis. It's something yo'll have to figure out when you get to that stage of your life.

  7. im sure you would have time but nost vets come out on call so you would have be prepared to leave what your doing at almost any time. so its kind of hard to answer this question

  8. well my other half is a vet! he competed and had horses untill he went 2 college to do his 5 yrs training, and then once he got settled into a job at a veterinary pracitce, he started to get involved again with horses. Vets are on call, and so some nights you would be on call, and some weekends you will be on call..... It all depends on how much work you want to put into the horses! if you have someone who could help you look after the horse then yep its easy enough, but if your going to do be doing it on your own it can be quite a strain. you would find it easier if the horse is kept out and even maybe a sharer to help you with the day to day chores. good luck

  9. My vet has three and she shows them, so you make time to do extra stuff you want to do.  My vet also doesn't have appointments on the weekend, only emergencies and she has another vet that covers for her.

  10. put it this way. james robinson is a vet and he competes round badminton every year! if you work out a daily plan around your job you'll find you have time. when your a vet, you can choose how much or little you want to work. you can work 2 days a week or 6.

  11. Well, that is a question, only you can answer.

Are you going to make time for R&R, regardless if your boss, prior to getting your own surgery says "No"?

And He may be like myself, -all work and no play, will get you better and faster results than when you overwork some-one.

    Balls in your court.

It is a wonderful vocation for animal lovers, but certainly not for the faint hearted and those who believe it is cuddling fluffy puppies all day.

God bless you in your future endeavours, and make that time for doing whatever makes you relaxed, free and happy!

  12. Yes! But you need to be careful and spend plenty of time with it when you are not on call

  13. My vet has around 5 horses. She has been in the buissness forever, and she has a little spare time. When you have spare time, you have to still have your pager. I remember once my horse broke out in hives at a show, we called her, but she was on a trail ride. She told us what to do, and that she didn't need to come down. My horse was fine after.

  14. Well i  depend what kinda vet you are if you do call outs then probly not. If you just did it like a 9-5 job or shifts then yea.

  15. There is alot that factors in to it. Do you own your own practice? You can also board a horse at any stable and most of them take care of them fro you. I had a horse and I did the maintenance on the weekends but during the week they fed, cleaned and exercised him for me
