Yes, now it is a law that you have to have a passport to go out of the country. In order to get one you need your birth certificate, proof of identity, and two recent 2X2 color photos. You can get those taken at Walgreen for about eight dollars. Here is a site that should help you figure out how much passports cost, places you need to go and get it, and any other information. Recently a law was passed in the US that requires even US citizens to carry a passport when visiting or returning from Mexico.

Since this is a brand new law, border patrol and immigration have been somewhat lenient, but I would not risk it.

Get your passport.
