no, you wanna align your eyes with the basket and know where the defender is, if you can align your eyes to the basket and pump fake the defender should go  towards your shooting hand then you can blow by him for a drive or a good pass

of course you can put one leg up when you pump fake. but make sure you keep your pivot foot. after you fake, if you want to drive around the person, make sure that the leg you put up is the same side you want to drive around. otherwise you might get caught up in a travel.

putting your leg up makes for a quick drive to the basket if it's the correct leg and if it's done right.

Edit: Like mentioned in the answer above me, it is important to also keep your eyes directed at the basket and know the location of the defender as well.

Edit: It's an interesting question. I think some people may have different ideas of how high to bring the leg up or something like that. I should have mentioned that if you do, it should be barely; just enough to make the defender really believe that you are going to shoot.

And not get called for traveling?  Yes you can, as long as the foot that is not getting raised off the floor stays planted and remains your "pivot" foot.

Yes, you can often draw a foul if you put out your leg. Beware though, cause if you play in the street and you accidentally hit someone in their you-know-what, they gonna kick your ***.

Can you?  sure.  Should you? No.  Fakes need to be short and sharp so they can be quick as well.  The ball should go no higher than your chin in your shot fake, your eyes need to dart up to the rim (no higher) and then drive or shoot.
