  1. Let me put it to you this way.  My roommate refused to pay the $12 Mo for a great deal for high speed internet.  I had all levels of security going, but deliberately left the Admin password open to see if he would try to hack in to my wireless network.  He is a former IT manager.  He always kept saying a dial up was great for him.  I caught him doing in, but instead of getting angry, I hacked into his computer copied all his data files onto my external hard drive and one by one deleted all his applications, data then reset his restore and then reformatted his hard drive from my bedroom.

After that I put an administrative password on my router and put much longer and more difficult passwords on my router and turned off my router.

He had spoofed a MAC ID that I wasn't using.  This is a guy who was an expert and thought he could get away with s******g me over-Someone I knew for years.

To this day, he has no idea  what happened.   Am I a mean person?  Not really, I could have called my cable company and reported him for stealing cable and had him hauled off to jail and pay a huge fine after letting them to prove it.  In my view, I did him a favor by saving him jail time and at the same time cleaning up my network.   :-)

I may not be a great computer expert, but I love counter punching hackers.  Unfortunately my roommate just told me something had happened to his computer and he just discovered someone hacked into his e-mail account and changed the password.  My only reply was telling him how I thought people who steal passwords and thought hacking and cheating were the worst type of people.  They isolate others space and I regarded it the equivalent of rape because it never makes the computer user to feel safe again   :-).  Message sent-Message received.

If you enter my network, you play by my rules.  His computer is now a paperweight.  Moral of the story is most hackers over estimate how good they are-regardless of how good they. There are also hackers groups that try to lure others to enter their network by having networks broadcasting names like Linksys, D-Link, Netgear to try to get people to hack into their deliberately unsecured networks just so the can get data off that computer and software if the need it...Beware.

For $12 Mo, my roommate had his head handed to him ans was asked how he enjoyed the taste. A same insurance to pay for securing your own computer.

  2. If you are just "borrowing" the internet signal, then his only indication would be that the internet activity light on his modem will activate when your are using the signal.  But if you have a network setup, there is a good chance that he could access your system.

You should know that borrowing your neighbors internet connection is not legal.  Not even if he knows your are doing it.  It's called "Theft of Service" and ISP's do not like this kind of activity at all.

  3. If he has a program which looks at whose connected through the network (which I highly doubt) than he could see your connected but not tell who it is. He would have to install software on your computer to see your activity.

  4. Yes.

  5. He CAN tell that "someone" is using his bandwidth.

He CAN NOT see into your files, unless you have File Sharing enabled.

To share files, you need to map drives to each others computers.

  6. Yes. Most people would not know how to do it though. He would need to set up a packet sniffer on a computer and capture the raw data between your computer and the router. Then he can reconstruct what data was being sent. As I said, I highly doubt he could or would bother. However, most routers(mine does) log which computer on the LAN connected to what IP address on the internet(WAN). He would be able to see what sites you have been to but he would not be able to login to your accounts or anything like that.

If you're going to use an untrusted internet source, you should encrypt your transmission and reroute your data before it gets to whatever website or host you are trying to connect to.
