  1. Earthworms are the base of many food chains, and their long list of predatorsinclude Starlings, Thrushes, Gulls, Crows, Robins, Hedgehogs, Moles, Beetles, Snails,Slugs, Flatworms, and a number of internal parasites. Major disturbances in the soil often result in the decline of Earthworm population due to increased exposure to predators, UV radiation, and insufficient moisture. Development is a primary cause of soil disturbance because of the extensive excavation and soil compaction. This combined with the alteration of local hydrology puts stress on these natural aerators. It is important to consider these minute residents of the soil when we design, maintain, and use our urban spaces. Very little soil is allowed to accumulate the leaf litterrequired by Earthworms for food, moisture, and temperature regulation. Compaction byheavy machinery and over-saturation of soils creates undue stress on these creatures. The health and fertility of the soil depends on the aeration activities of the Earthworm.Without their presence and constant activity, little soil depth beyond the first inch or two would contain vital organic matter and nutrients.

  2. Rainfall causes earthworm deaths through asphyxiation.

They are also suceptible to cold and will die with a significant enough drop in temperature.

  3. Soil compaction, excessive tillage, lack of organic matter, lack of soil fertility, possibly acidity.
