If it's less than 0 degrees outside, what do you wear to keep warm?

And how many layers of clothing would you need to keep warm? If you wear a lot of layers, could this prevent you from even feeling uncomfortable? (eskimos, and other northern people, after all, could only rely on layers of clothing - and they seem fine - do they have to constantly go through pain to travel through the extreme cold?)

  1. layers of clothing with layer closest to your body synthetic material, Outer layer a windbreaker.  layers in between can be wool, cotton etc.

Sox made of wool or synthetic with insulated boots, thermal under [ants and wind resistant outer pants

Hat that covers ears and/or face.

  2. 0 degrees celcius i take it you are talking about? Dunno jumper or hoody or something with jeans would keep you fairly warm.

  3. Well it depends, if it's only -1 or somethiong you can just wear a warm coat but if it's like -40, you should wear something like a hat, mittens, scarf, and a winter jacket with a sweater.

  4. Extreme cold always causes pain, most dont' travel in it at all.

There are special types of clothing that breath that you can buy to layer properly in cold weather like that. Look at survival sites for clothing, Lands End has some nice stuff too.

  5. If it is extremely cold outside I would Rather stay at home, but if I need to go outside I would wear a  water resistant  coat, dress which sleeves snug to the wrists, a scarf that i can use to cover my face, and several layers of lose fitting dress inside the coat so I can move freely. I will also wear a hat.

I think the Eskimos had a hard time traveling through cold weather but they were used to it. Imagine yourself living in an extremely cold or extremely hot environment since your childhood, I think you'll be accustomed to that.

  6. Well if you have common weather like that you could popably get away with wear a sweater , coat ,hat and gloves.

but if you long sleeve T-shirt, sweater, coat , face mask, gloves and its really bad try using hot pads.

  7. Its great fun to be out in the cold!  For skiing and other snow sports, physical activity keeps you warm, so two or three well designed, thin layers are sufficient.  For ice fishing or snowmobiling, I wear well-insulated clothing, three or four layers so I can shed if I get too warm.  At temperatures below 0 degrees F, I cover my face with a bandanna.  Painful?  I've never had frostbite, but there were a couple of times that my hands and feet got too cold, and it hurt when they were warming back up.

  8. its a temperature in antartica.. you're talking about..

i found these tips, hope it gives you information:

clothing you need to stay warm when it's really cold outside:

*Boxer shorts - Simpson's or a nice penguin pattern.

*A thin comfortable pair of socks.

*A thermal long-sleeved vest and longjohns made of highly insulating material that "wicks" sweat away from the skin to the outer layers.

*One or two pairs of thick warm socks, wool loop stitch (like towelling - but wool) or similar.

*Thick warm trousers (pants) of a natural material such as moleskin or synthetic material such as fleece or pile fibre.

*Two or three insulating layers for the top half of the body. Wool mix or synthetic shirt, woollen sweater, fleece sweater and /or jacket. Adjustability is important here, zips, buttons etc. At least one of these layers should be long at the back to avoid exposure of flesh during exertion.

*Head wear, an insulating headband for when it's not so cold, a hat for when it's colder and with the addition of a balaclava for when it's really cold.

*Scarf or neck gaiter for insulation and to prevent ingress of blown snow.

*Insulated boots. Outer layer of leather with felt liner, plastic climbing double-boots with insulated inner. Bunny Boots, mukluks, soft nylon outer shell with felt insulation and thick insulated sole to prevent heat loss to the snow and ice for really cold conditions.

*2 or 3 pairs of gloves or mittens according to the conditions and activity. Usually starting with gloves (in case you have to do something "fiddly", gloves are easier than mittens and infinitely preferable to bare fingers) then one or two pairs of mittens. The outer pair should be wind proof.

bulletOuter / shell layer, this needs to be windproof and may be waterproof. It could be simply a "shell" i.e. no additional insulation or it may have insulation built in. Jackets should always have hoods, alternatives:

    >>Polar parka, with down or synthetic insulation

    >>Ventile windproof jacket and over-trousers

    >>Gore-tex or similar jacket and over-trousers

    >>Salopette (sort of dungaree-type trousers / pants) with down or synthetic insulation

*Sunglasses to prevent glare from the snow and ice and stop you from developing snow blindness. Goggles in colder weather or in conditions of blowing snow to prevent snow from getting in the eyes and to cover the top part of the face.

these all are clothing style that is recommended by Captain Robert Scott's and crue in their expedition to the South Pole in 1911 - 1912. so i guess those in north pole do not have much choice in fashion style..

  9. depends how much less it is. Im guessing 0 degrees celsius too?

You could make it out in just a sweater or tshirt if it was just at 0, but the colder it gets, the more stuff you want to wear.

I wouldnt say its uncomfertable, but if you have sensitive skin, the layer that is touching you, have it made of something that wont irratate your skin.

Also, when wearing multiple layers, you have to remember to not let the layer closest to you get wet from sweat, or you will be cold no matter how much you have on. If you start sweating, take off layers until you stop. If you do get sweat building up inside, you will be better off changing, so even if you are still outside, in the long run it will be better to bare the cold for a moment while you change the clothes closest to you
