the reason we have them - and don't want others to have them (especially hositle powers) is it leads to instability around the world...

Are we any better than them...well no not really - we want more power for our own gains, power, resources, influence - so of course they naturally want to be on a level playing field... but it isn't in our interests.

also the less people with these weapons - the less chance of them being used!!!

The whole concept of fairness and if we can have them - they should be able to is a terribly nieve perspective, and a total lack of human nature - and reality!

The nuclear weapon was created in the US so they had them before the international community tried to stop new countries from obtaining them.  It was the Non-Proliferation Treaty that prohibits new countries from obtaining nukes.  All of the countries that you mention already had them.

Let me also add that Israel has illegally built up their nuclear arsenal. No it is not a crime when you are following international regulation like Iran, but in the eyes of Washington if you are not a puppet to them they will weaken you as much as they can and claim all sorts. Hypocrisy and double standards are strong amongst western governments and the media as well.
