Spouse's manic episodes have gone from approximately 4 months, increased to 7 months and has now been almost one year. He refuses treatment and medication.

Is it common/uncommon for mania to last this long?

  1. normal all obsesions and mania's should be treaten right away if not treaten it will only escalate !

  2. First and foremost your support and understanding is needed.  A bipolar person in an episode is in turmoil and needs your strength to hang on to. In order for you to be supportive you must understand this disorder as well as you possibly can.  There are many ways of learning about the illness. Listening to your spouse is probably the best resource.

With mania, either euphoria or irritability may be the main symptom. There are significant negative effects (such as sexual recklessness, excessive and impulsive shopping, and sudden travelling) on a patients relationships, social life and performance at work.

Untreated mania lasts at least a week, and it can last for months. The episode will eventually escalate and become more severe if left untreated.

  3. It all depends on the person.  Regardless of how long they last they usually do become more severe.
