and the general public knew the owners were black would these companys be the big successes they are today or would white people refuse to use them because they are black owned.

Im thinking about starting a major cooperation and i want people to know its black created do you think they will shun the business beacuse they are putting money into the hands of a black man?

  1. Two words: "Oprah Winfrey"

    Two more "Barack Obama"

  2. In my opinion, the vast majority of the general public is much more concerned with the quality of goods and services that companies provide than with the race of the owners.

There are many successful companies which were created and are owned by black entrepreneurs. They may not yet be the size of some of the companies you cited, but neither are they shunned by the white or Hispanic consumer or business owner. I was suprised to find out that Oprah Winfrey's Harpo, Inc. was ranked only 9th among black owned companies in terms of revenues (as of 2003). The attached article should be helpful to you.

Also, keep in mind a few examples of major companies that may not have been created by blacks but were or are run by them:

When Richard Parsons was named Chairman of the Board of Time Warner, people did not start cancelling their cable service or their AOL accounts, nor did they boycott Warner Brothers' movies.

When Ken Chenault became Chairman and CEO of American Express, people did not start cancelling their cards.

When Stan O'Neal became CEO of Merrill Lynch, people did not close or transfer their accounts.

There will always be unfortunate exceptions but not enough to thwart a good business model, be it based on goods or services. That includes hotels and resorts.

Just one more comment, and I don't mean this to be condescending. You don't start a major corporation; you start a corporation and work hard to build it into a major.

    Best wishes for your success.

  3. I think there is a big difference between a company who's identity rests on being owned by a certain demographic and on those that happen to be owned by a certain demographic.

Lets change things for a moment:

x corp:  our reason for you doing business with us is the fact that we can help you - here's how.  Oh yeah, if you care, all the owners are of European American decent.

    or...

x corp: our reason for you doing business with us is the fact that all the owners are of European American decent.

Nice and PC... but...  If I want a business partner I don't care where, when or what you come from.  I only care if you can make me money or not.

The fact that option 'B' was more interested in THEIR heritage than what they can do to make ME money turns me off.

"Look at me" doesn't work.  "Look at what I can do for you" does no matter what.  Skin color isn't relevant - result are...  your customers don't care about your skin color - even a racist will sign up with you if you make them money.  A culture lover, by contrast, won't sign with you if you don't make them money either.

  4. (That's quite racism...? I don't care about races because we, black or white, are one race: HUMAN RACE!!!)

I think it will be still balanced. If people know a big corporation that is owned by blacks, the white racist will move away to a corporation owned by whites, but the black racist moved from the corp. owned by whites to this corp.

And if some racist 'cannot live without that product (by other race)', they will use it anyway...
