  1. And evolved from does not mean that the descendants necessarily destroyed the predecessors or completely replaced them    Dog evolved from wolves and coyotes, etc., but there are still wild dogs around because they occupy a different niche in nature.   On Darwin's islands, the Galapagos's, there have evolved many different kinds of finches to eat different kinds of food, yet that does not wipe out those that live on the original foods.

"Survival of the fittest" is about the forces of change and not a rule of a zero sum game as too many people treat it.

  2. Your question is asked every week. Check tons of answers already given.

  3. lizards are pre-historic, so many animals are residuals of such early ancestors

  4. You're misinterpreting Evolutionary theory. It's not that we evolved from Apes. What happens is that at some point a species forms reproductive groups which eventually become so different from each other that they are no longer the same species.

Chimpanzees are our closest biological relative, but it's not that chimps evolved into humans. Evolution never stops, chimps have been evolving on their own as long as we have. But somewhere, way back in time we were both a single species that divided and differentiated. In Human evolution a big aspect of this was Bipedalism (walking on two legs) which freed the use of the hands.

Chimps evolved separate characteristics, such as being better suited for climbing and living in an arboreal habitat.

Read Glen Conroy's 'Reconstructing Human Origins' if you want a more detailed explanation.

    Hope that helps.
