  1. Whatever it takes to keep the place staffed.  Ortho is one of the busiest services - people slip on the ice in winter, blow their fingers off on July 4th, crash cars and break hips all year long.

Salaries vary.  They don't go hungry.

You better believe they work on weekends!  That's when everybody is out breaking their bones.

  2. It depends on a lot of things.  Mostly logistics. Where they practice. A NY city orthopedic MD could get 250K a year and works 3 days a week.

Yet, in a small Mississippi town, he could work 7 days a week for a paltry 60k!

If there is a lot of competition, rates will also be affected.

Best bet - a college town with a big sports program and lots of injuries.  Especially a large university (Yale, duke, Harvard, etc) that has a football team and gymnastics injuries!  Yeah.

  3. Salaried positions are rare. And there will be more clinic hours than OR time, no matter whether the clinic is in the same building or not. If you're careful, you may be able to keep your hours down to fifty or so on an average week, or a bit above, and have an income in the vicinity of $300k.

Of course you'll have to be on call weekends. Shared call in groups is the norm, so you can have some of your weekends off, but there has to be somebody available 24/7, and who that is depends on the local situation.

By the way, I'm not in orthopedics, but I am in a small MS town, and you can't find a nurse practitioner who'll work for $60k. Incomes here are at or slightly above national averages, except mine! LOL
