If marbles are not made of marble, why are they called marbles?

If marbles are not made of marble, why are they called marbles?

Marbles have been around for many centuries and they were at one time made from marble.  They were not invented by some guy named marble.  They are now made out of glass, but they used to be made from clay.  I guess they could have just as easily been called clays, agates, or glassies or something.
