If mark spitzer competed in the 50m race that did not exist in 1972?

he would have won 8 gold...as opposed to 7.

why not just add another race...say 75 meter freestyle..and have phelps win a nineth gold and another world record??

Well, you're probably right about that.  In fact when Spitz was whining about not being invited to China, he said that himself.

look, the fact is, michael phelps still is a faster swimmer than spitz in all his events, ergo, phelps is the best.
