If men stand, do women?

I know that it's polite for men to stand to shake someones hand who arrives, but does the same apply to women?

if it's a professional meeting both sexes are expected to stand. but men are the usually only ones that stand when a lady walks in the room. i think it's really polite but i don't see too many guys doing that anymore.

Well I guess it depends on the girl. If you're talking business wise yes, to be polite she must stand. But if you're talking about greeting someone in to the home I guess not.
