  1. If money is no object then both!

I'm not in the fortunate position where money is no object but I really do use both (and also Pinnacle Studio!).

Why? Because at the other contributors say each program is different and this way I get the best of each.

Oh! Why Studio? It's quick, easy to use and, for some editing, it has enough features for a basic DVD

Not sure if that answers the question - hope so cause I could sure use the points!

  2. >>Premier and Avid express are top of the line....

Vegas used to be great before Sony bought it.....

Final cut is garbage for the price....<<

Rubbish. I'm an FCP6 user and also a Premiere CS3 user, and although they're both good FCP6 scores. That's why it's more widely adopted in the broadcast and movie industries.

Anyhow, Premiere has its uses and is a good application that will satisfy pretty much every user's needs, but Vegas is also very good. It's a rock solid application that does the job. I don't like its interface personally (but I've been working in the indistry for too long and am a bit set in my ways) but it's still highly regarded by those who use it. It's also very good value for money. Why not download a trial version and have play? That way you can decide if you like it without laying out real money!

  3. From that choice I'd go for Adobe CS3 at its more logical in workflow has BETTER end results and more flexible.

that said if you cant stretch to Adobe CS3 can I make an alternative suggestion  try using the Apple Mac and ILife 08 with iMovie as its got many of the features of Final Cut Pro (which is even better than Adobe) and its cheap and works with all DV sources.

OK it needs a Mac to work on but by the time you have bough Adobe you could have afforded a MacBook with this on for free!

If money was no object I would go for the Final Cut Pro from Apple that's even clearer and flexible than either of these 2 choices and 75% of `Film companies use it so that's a recommendation for you

  4. they both are good but the have a few different features between them.

  5. Maybe I'm partial, but you won't get the same professional workflow as Adobe on Sony's Vegas. Don't get me wrong; I've heard a lot of good things come out of Sony Vegas, and it has earned it's spot among Adobe, Avid, and Final Cut as a pro NLE. But you just don't see nearly as many serious pro filmmakers trusting it to do high quality conforms--though many pros use Sony.

As for me, I just don't like the workflow and Sony interface, compared to Adobe. What I do like about it is that it gives you the same professional tools as the higher profile NLEs like multiple video and audio tracks that are simple to use. However, Adobe's workflow is much smoother, and it seems more natural for a seasoned editor; once you get the hang of it, editing goes very quickly and smoothly.

I also have some doubts over the quality of Sony Vegas Pro. A few months ago, I downloaded the Vegas Pro trial to give it a try. I shot on my Sony VX2100, and captured with the correct settings, and it's quality looked like that of Windows Movie Maker. It was pretty frustrating. I wasn't sure if I downloaded the right version, but it said it was the Vegas Pro. However, it is VERY possible that the trial version doesn't give you full quality... in fact, I'm almost sure. It's probably better if someone with real Vegas Pro experience would share

And as a side note: I never had doubts about Adobe's quality. I hear the new CS3 can edit in resolutions as high as 4K by 4K. Pretty impressive. That's 16MP. At most HD is 2MP so it's not like you'll be utilizing that capacity, but it gives you quite a bit of wiggle room. From my experience, Adobe is just as good as Avid's Media Composer, which is the industry standard in Hollywood. Still, if price wasn't an issue, I'd get Apple's Final Cut Studio, not because it's better at video editing, but because it's the entire production package (Soundtrack Pro for music composing, Motion for 3D graphics, Compressor for compressing videos, Color for color grading, and DVD Studio Pro for pro DVD creation)

And like I said before, you just don't see many pro editors using Vegas. Maybe it's because Vegas Pro is somewhat the new kid on the block.

Side note (2): Premiere Pro, being a CS3 product is directly compatible with the rest of Adobe's production package, should you purchase that later. For example, you could work with Premiere Pro footage then bring it up in After Effects without the need to render.

PS: if you are a student you can get student discounts:

    Adobe: $350 on JourneyED's website

Avid: $295 on JourneyED's site (careful: requires powerful computer)

Final Cut: $700 on the Apple Store

    don't know about Sony Vegas

Hope that helps! I'm sure you'll be happy regardless of your decision-- you can't go wrong with either program.

  6. Premier and Avid express are top of the line....

Vegas used to be great before Sony bought it.....

Final cut is garbage for the price....
